Tallow is having quite a moment in the world of health and beauty. Its resurgence harkens back to the simplicity of the centuries that preceded us. Rooted in practicality, the use of tallow reflects a philosophy that once guided everyday life: use what you have, waste little, and honor the whole animal. Long before “sustainability” became a marketing term, rendering fat was simply part of responsible stewardship, transforming what may have been discarded into something useful, nourishing, and incredibly beneficial.
For generations, rendered beef fat sat in counter-top jars and cast-iron skillets across the West. Then it disappeared, edged out by harmful, industrialized seed oils, marketed as lighter but really are just cheaper. But now, in Idaho and the broader Mountain West, small producers are reclaiming an age-old craft.
Audra Sma founded Sublime Apothecary & Co. in 2020, supported by her partner JD, niece Mesa, and their “tiny alchemist” daughter Winzlow. And while Audra and the Sublime Apothecary are now in their fifth year of business, the seeds began to take root many years ago.
“It began as a personal journey searching for something deeply nourishing for my own skin,” Audra explained. “As I explored ancestral practices and traditional remedies, I kept coming back to tallow—simple, effective, and time-honored. Once I experienced the difference, I felt called to share it with others.”
Her work is shaped by a desire to live closer to the land and create with purpose and intention. Life in the Wood River Valley cultivated a lasting reverence for the natural world for Audra, and becoming a mother deepened her devotion to simplicity, rhythm, and thoughtful care. These principles continue to guide everything she builds.
She operates from a foundation of integrity, transparency, and respect for traditional methods. Audra favors simple, recognizable ingredients, sourcing locally whenever possible, minimizing waste, and formulating products that support the skin rather than overwhelm it with toxic chemicals and synthetic fragrances.
Her hope is that each jar invites a sense of ritual and connection.
Everything is produced in small batches using thoughtfully sourced ingredients. She prepares the tallow herself, crafts botanical infusions, and blends each formula by hand. It is often a family effort to ensure that each batch receives careful attention from beginning to end.
“One of the biggest challenges has been balancing growth while staying true to our small-batch roots,” she explained. “Especially as tallow becomes more widely recognized. Educating people about quality and sourcing is ongoing work.”
As consumers, responsible business practices matter and our choices carry more influence than we often realize. But it takes work to maintain a standard of moral principles. Ethical sourcing isn’t just a marketing choice, it’s a values decision. And one that has a big impact. Because when ingredients come from nearby ranchers and growers, there’s accountability.
She shared, “Producing locally has deepened my connection to Idaho in a profound way. From farmers markets to local shops and collaborations with other small businesses, it’s created a strong sense of belonging and purpose. Knowing the people and places behind the ingredients keeps the work grounded and meaningful.”
Audra’s products extend beyond tallow, often combining magnesium and various botanicals to cultivate the perfect blends. Some of her most popular products are cleansers, the Bee Natural “Botox” serums, magnesium creams, and her seasonal ritual offerings.
“At its heart, Sublime Apothecary is about slowing down—reconnecting with simple ingredients, meaningful rituals, and the wisdom that’s been passed down through generations.” She continued passionately, “My hope is that people feel cared for when they use our products and inspired to live a little closer to nature in their everyday lives.” At its simplest, tallow is nutrient-dense, shelf-stable, and remarkably versatile. In the kitchen, it handles high heat without breaking down, delivering clean flavor and crisp texture. In skincare, its fatty acid profile closely mirrors our own, making it deeply moisturizing and surprisingly compatible with sensitive skin. For those wary of ultra-processed ingredients, tallow and Audra’s Sublime Apothecary offers something refreshingly transparent: one ingredient, rendered well.
