Kent Oram is a native Idahoan—he’s lived in Blackfoot, Boise, Pingree, Chubbuck, and Pocatello. You may recognize him as the face of Idaho Central Credit Union, a company he joined in 1984. There, he served as CEO from 2007 until his retirement in December of 2022.
“When I began with ICCU, my job was in the building formerly at the corner of 4th and Idaho,” Oram said. “I have always thought ICCU’s presence there could be improved. That branch location is one of our busiest and the people who frequent the branch are great.”
Now, that location is being developed as a multi-use high rise with condos, called The Bannock.
“I engaged with Tommy Ahlquist to brainstorm on usage of the property that would maximize it for the benefit of as many as possible. The design and implementation of the design are excellent. I like the location. I like the multi-use nature of the project. I like the transition from apartments to condos. I think the project will create a sense of community that will expand beyond just the Bannock to include the larger neighborhood,” Oram said.
In fact, if he were spending more time in Boise, Oram said he would happily live there. But he’s gladly settled into retirement, which he’s making the most of—enjoying Idaho on two wheels instead.
“There is no better way to see the beauty our state has to offer than from the seat of a bike,” he said.
“When I was preparing to retire, we wondered if we could create a ‘compound’ where most of our family could live together. We found a small farm in Bingham County outside of Blackfoot. We sold five acres to our youngest daughter with her husband and four children. We sold ten acres to our oldest daughter and her husband with their six children,” explained Oram.
Oram and his wife Dawnette, who has been at his side since 1979, kept five acres for themselves.
“We all built new homes during the past 24 months and now, we have a lot of fun and shared experiences together. We farm 20 acres of alfalfa to feed our horses, sheep, and goats. Our middle daughter is a registered nurse and is exceptional at her job. She and her youngest girl visit us at the family compound as often as her busy life allows,” said Oram.
In both work and retirement, Oram’s signature compassion shines, guiding his decision-making, lifestyle, and philosophy.
“Be kind to everyone you meet inside and outside your company. Help everyone you work with understand how they are having a positive impact on the lives around them,” said Oram.
